Buy a Baby Changing Station
This is my one definite must-have. I recommend buying a baby changing station. As well as it being a great height for changing baby’s bum, there are also shelves where you can store all your baby paraphernalia. The one I have is on wheels, so it can be moved round the house when needed. We usually keep it in our dining room, but simply wheel it into the office when we have guests over for dinner.
The reason I am so insistent about the baby changing station is back pain! My partner has a bad back, and has had operations on it in the past. The baby changing station means he doesn’t need to stoop down and possibly harm his back, when changing baby. No excuses not to handle those stinky bums!

We bought a nappy changing unit from Ikea after a few weeks, because changing our baby boy’s nappies on the floor or on the bed was very uncomfortable and we got carpets and mattresses wet more than once! So when we got the unit it was a great relief. However at 6-7 months he would turn onto his tummy on his own (his new trick) every time we lied him on top the changing unit. Needless to say, that got dangerous after a while.
As he developed more and more it became just impossible to change him on top of that unit, as he just wouldn’t stay still, so in the end we had to put the changing mat back on the floor, and now the only way to keep him from turning and our backs from aching is to put one leg across his tummy and give him something to play with, while we work on the bottom part. It works, and also for our backs, no problems.
