Breastfeeding tips by Veena V

Breast feeding is best for babies, it gives them all the nutrients their tiny bodies need.

However, I just wish one of the midwives, doctors, health visitors, even books explained the problems. If I knew I would have still breast fed but at least I would have been better informed and it wouldn’t have caused unnecessary upset.

Everyone explains the benefits, which is great, but someone really should let us know the truth!

1.       Breast milk is more easily digestible than formula milk, therefore expect to feed your baby in the early weeks / months every 2 hours (DAY & NIGHT). Some woman may find they are feeding even more frequently than this or if you’re lucky your baby may feed every 3 hours.

Remember your baby will eventually not need feeding every 2 hours, as they get bigger they will take more milk in and go on longer without feeding. Your doing really well, so stick on in there :)

2. Your breasts may leak when:

  • You are feeding, the other breast may leak
  • Your baby cries (nature is amazing!)
  • Its time for feeding, especially if your baby feeds every 3 hours now instead of 2.
  • Randomly in the day or night

3. When you start introducing solids or if you decide to start bottle feeding you need to wean your breasts from breast feeding! Sounds silly but this is very true. Cut out one feed at a time. I did this very slowly when I wanted to start bottle feeding…..I cut out one breastfeed every 1/2 weeks and replaced with a bottle. At 4 months my son was having 3 breastfeeds and 3 bottles a day.

4. Very Important tip!

When your breasts become engorged and are really painful. Do not express the milk, take parecetomol and your boobs will adjust in a week or so.
