Top tips for Antenatal Depression:

  • Seek the support of your GP or Midwife as soon as you think you may be suffering from depression.
  • Keep Talking: Surround yourself with a support network of those you know can provide an ear to listen when needed.
  • Encourage friends and family to learn about the illness and attend appointments with you or help with practical tasks like the washing, so you can put your feet up.
  • Consider setting up a support group in your area: Your midwife may know of other mums-to-be in a similar situation who may benefit from talking with others about their experience
  • Don’t suffer in silence: Depression in pregnancy is now recognised by medical professionals and more support is available to pregnant mums.  Keep your GP or midwife up to date on how you’re feeling or speak to your consultant about treatment options.

VIP’s top tips brought to you from:

Delphi Ellis is an Award Winning Life Coach and Counsellor who specialises in Dream and Nightmare Analysis.  Her own experience of depression in pregnancy (sometimes called ante-natal or pre-natal depression) in 2004 and the lack of information available at the time motivated Delphi to create her website www.depression-in-pregnancy.org.uk to tell her story and provide support and information for those who may be affected.

Veena V Says:

If you find yourself becoming increasingly emotional make sure you talk to your GP / Midwife / Health Visitor. Delphi’s website is great, it has all the symptoms of antenatal depression, useful links and where you can get help from. Don’t suffer in silence; there are so many other mums that have been through it and are willing to help. Pregnancy can be very emotional, make sure you talk to the right people, be positive and make your pregnancy a happy and healthy one J
